Don't even try to make all of the recipes on the day of the party—we promise you will regret it.

Up to 2 days ahead:

Up to 1 day ahead:

  • Make the onion topping for the tart, store covered in the refrigerator until ready to assemble.
  • Prepare the crostini for the Tomato, Avocado, and Goat Cheese Crostini, and for the Steak and Arugula Crostini, cool completely, then store in an airtight container.
  • Cook the potatoes for the potato nests.  Refrigerate until ready to use.
  • Prepare the shrimp and the sauce for the Roasted Shrimp Cocktail.  Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  • Make the fresh breadcrumbs for the Herbed Crab Cakes; store in a plastic bag at room temperature.  (You can actually make the breadcrumbs up to a month ahead; store in the freezer until ready to use.)

Up to 4 hours before serving:

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F.  While oven is heating, grease muffin pans for the potato nests, peel and grate the potatoes and continue with the recipe.  Keep at room temperature until ready to re-warm.
  • Roll out the dough for the tart, keep covered with the parchment paper in the refrigerator until ready to assemble.
  • Chop the parsley for the steak crostini garnish.
  • Prep the endive leaves for the Smoked Salmon on Belgian Endive with Crème Fraîche and Chives, chop the smoked salmon, chop the chives, prepare the crème fraîche for piping. Refrigerate until ready to assemble.
  • Make the crab cakes; refrigerate until ready to sauté.


Up to 2 hours before serving:

  • Prepare the avocado/goat cheese mixture for the crostini; cover with plastic wrap, making sure to place the plastic wrap directly on top of the avocado mixture.
  • Broil the steaks, leave whole until ready to assemble the crostini.  


One hour before serving:

  • Preheat the oven for the tart; while the oven is heating, assemble the tart, then bake.
  • Re-crisp the crostini for about 5 minutes.  Assemble the steak crostini.
  • Sauté the crab cakes; keep warm until serving.
